Times have been hard for martial arts clubs, with training in dojos being forbidden, then allowed, forbidden again, and now reopening again... The Shindo Wadakai Karate Association (SWKA) had only just opened two dojos in Wales before the pandemic took hold.

About six months ago Shihan Pete Fawbert decided that he SWKA website was in need of an overhaul and as his ISP contract came to an end he took the opportunity to begin looking at ways of freshening up the look, tidying up the content, as well as adding all the new information that all three dojos required.

I began working on this project in February, from a safe social distance! I enjoy Pete-sensei's company, but this time we had to do the initial work using long phone calls, lots of text messaging, and the emailing of ideas. We are currently into the first stage, with a general idea of the basics, including the specific areas of information and some ways of organising this. Inital skecthes of possible layouts are being considered and tried out on the computer.

Now almost all restrictions have been lifted, interest has begun to pick up and new members are starting to join. At present, social media is providing the clubs with all they need, so the website idea is taking a bit of a holiday. Pausing for reflection is a common part of the design journey but I am sure that now we are almost "back to normal" a website will be the way to go.

The work so far is an investment for the future.
